The Cold War

The Cold War started right after World War II ended, between the Truman doctrine in 1947 and the Korean War in 1953. It was still going on through most of twentieth century. The Cold War continued through the 1960s and 70s. Even though a lot was going on during this time period, like the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Civil Rights Movement, and The Vietnam War antiwar Movement, the United States maintained its Cold War engagement with the The Soviet Union.

From 1979- 1985, was where a man named Mikhail Gorbachev who rose to power as a Soviet leader. This part of The Cold War was also know as the "Second Cold War" because of the rising tensions between the U.S. and the Soviet. Also around this time the Military was having problems like the Soviet War in Afghanistan, the Gulf of Sidra incident, and the U.S. invasion of Grenada.

I believed that if I tried to persuade the Soviets to have more Democracy and freedom of speech, just like the United States of America, then this might end Communism. During the Cold War there were nuclear bombs being made, and at the end of the Cold War, Mr. Gorbachev and I signed a treaty banning medium range nuclear weapons.

I helped escalate but also helped end the Cold War. I encouraged the Soviet Union to produce more oil. Oil became the main source of the Soviet export revenues. This helped improve the Soviet economy. It did not solve all their problems but things did get better.
